Compact:  Canon Digital IXUS 60 £160 approx, 6 megapixel, 3x optical,  very compact and light,

Compact alternative with optional waterproof case: Olympus Mju,  £180 approx,

Waterproof general case £35 approx www.pixmania.co.uk

Small with zoom:  Panasonic TZ3,  10X optical zoom with Image stabilisation £250 approx.  Great for sports events, without needing to lug masses of gear.  It still just about fits in your pocket and is not too heavy round the neck.

SLR - If you are going this technical then its a personal choice.
